Thai classical masked ballet (Khon) at King Rama II Park, Amphawa, Thailand
Khon is very high traditional art. It has been around since the Ayutthaya period. A Khon performance is a combination of many arts such as singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics, fighting, and music. Khon is often based on tales from the epic Ramakien (adapted from Ramayana epic). For Khon was performed at the King Rama II Park, not only base on the epic Ramakien, but also sometimes perform the stories from the literature, written by the King Rama II.
*Ramakien of Thailand which adapted from Ramayana epic has many versions such as Ayutthaya version, version of King Rama VI etc. But Ramakien in Khon performance uses the version of King Rama II as was written for Khon performance.
Khon is one that King Rama II rehabilitated during his reign. Every year in early February which is the royal birth month of King Rama II has the Royal Khon Performance held in King Rama II Memorial Park for celebration by H.R.H Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presides over the festival each year and always watches the Khon. Every year, many people come from everywhere to see this rare theatrical spectacle at the King Rama II Park, presented in on outdoor theater in a garden surrounding, in front of the King Rama II Museum.
