Wat Bang Kung/ Bang Kung Camp

Wat Bang Kung is one of Unseen Thailand and interesting temples in Thailand which the traveler should visit.

The temple is located in Bang Khonthi District, Samutsongkhram Province and away from the Amphawa floating market 6 km. It is the ancient temple which was built in Ayutthaya period (around 1701-1757).

King Ekkatat ordered his navy to build a camp here with a wall around it. Later, Local villagers built the temple to be the spiritual anchor. After the loss of second independence of Ayutthaya (the capital of Thailand at that time), this camp was deserted.

During the reign of King Taksin, Samutsongkhram became an important strategic route when he went to war against the Burmese from Dawei. By defeating the Burmese forces in this campaign know as "Bang Kung Camp War", Thai soldiers and people regained their self-confidence and self-respect.

There is an ancient ordination hall in Bang Kung Camp built in the Ayutthaya period where the Loung Phor Dam Bot Noi (Loung Phor Nil Mani) image is installed (The attitude of subduing Mara). The temple has been covered with many kinds of trees which are Bodhi Tree, Banyan Trees, and Bengal fig trees. It seems like the temple built within a huge banyan tree. The hall itself is decorated with paintings which were painted in Ayutthaya period. (Paintings may not see in the present because it was restored.)

Bang Kung Camp was abandoned around 200 years until  1967 A.D. The Ministry of Education uses for the Scout Camp and build the statue of the Great King Taksin in the yard on the outside in one year later.

In addition to, Wat Bang Kung has an ancient pool and the river right in front of the temple pier is filled with fish.
