Maeklong Railway Market, Samutsongkhram

The railway to Maeklong is one of the oldest railways in Thailand. Formerly, it belonged to a private, foreign-owned company (Tha Chin Railway Company Limited) who won concession from the government of King Rama V. The king assigned his son the crown prince, later King Rama VI, to preside over the grand opening ceremony of the route on December 29, 1904, 40 years later, when the concession was completed, the company transferred possession to the government, and it was then operated by Maeklong Railway in 1952. Then, in 1955, the business was merged with the State Railway of Thailand.
In the past, the road had few and not as good as the present. People traveled across the province by train and traveled inside the province with ships, mostly. Because our province has the important rivers flowing through. The canal has been excavated since the past, with up to 300 main canals.
When the train arrived at the station. There are merchants were between both sides of the train for selling the goods to the passengers. As time passed by, the number of merchants was increasing. Finally, it became the fresh-food market center of the province until today.
At present, the Maeklong Railway route is divided into 2 phases. The first runs between "Klongsan (Wongwian Yai)" and "Mahachai", and the second part between "Tha Chin (Ban Laem)"and "Maeklong". Train service begins at 5.00 a.m. daily.
